ABC’s Fundamentals of Basic Health! Lets get back to the basics.

  • Are you eating?

  • Are you pooping?

  • Are you sleeping?

A.

Diet.

Are you eating enough? Calories, Carbs?

We are in a Carb phobic time of living! And now with over 50 Million people on GLP's our food intake is slowing down and food choices are diminishing. With a diet lower in complex carbohydrate aka FIBER we have a more compromised ability to use our short chain fatty acids( SCFA’s) to make a healthy microbiome. We need nutrient dense foods, including carbohydrates to fuel our ATP to make energy in the body and the brain, proteins to build muscle,  and enough food with variability to keep our immune system strong.

Food as medicine.

B.

Bowel Movements.

Where are you on the Bristol scale?

Are you having daily bowel movements at least once a day, brown, banana shaped and easy to pass? Are you experiencing an excess of gas and bloating, indigestion, burping, constipation, diarrhea or both? Your daily habits of elimination tell us a lot about your health. Pooping at least once a day is ideal so you can excrete toxins, balance, hormones, and remove, inflammation from the body. Constipation can recirculate harmful materials back into the body to then cause trouble or be stored away in fat cells. Hormones can also be recirculated creating menstrual cycle abnormalities, acne, insomnia, and metabolic changes. If your bowels are moving too fast and leaning towards looser, stools or diarrhea, the increased transit time can prevent you from absorbing the nutrients that you need for proper growth and development.

Some of our new wonder drugs in the 21st century are slowing down our digestion by mechanism of action. This can include life-saving properties to balance cholesterol and blood sugar inflammation and weight loss AND it also is having a profound effect on our digestion, absorption and elimination.  Over 70% of the immune system is regulated by our digestive tract so this is an important bodily system to keep operating like a finely tuned machine.

More than 80% of our serotonin is made in the gut! Your digestion, absorption and assimilation of your food is vital to your happiness!

C.

Circadian Rhythms

Do you fall asleep and stay asleep for 8 hours a night?

I was recently reading a book about the Dalai Lama and how he gets up at three in the morning to meditate for five hours! And I thought I know he’s a supreme being but he must be super human…..and then I also learned that he goes to bed at 7 PM!

Sleep is one of the most fundamental processes in the body for survival. Sleep deprivation is a form of torture! It is of vital importance to make sleep a priority if you have the luxury to do so. If sleep is affected because of stress, anxiety, stimulants, over-stimulation, hormone changes etc…etc… then these are external components to assess and uncover so we can help you get your Zzzz’s.

The death of the mind is relaxation.

If you find yourself propelled forward by excess, overthinking, anxiety, monkey mind and rumination we can help you promote deep REM sleep to reset the nervous system, replenish the mind, and rest the body.

TIPS:

  • An apple a day keeps the doctor away! The malic acid in the skin of apples stimulates alkaline saliva production, which helps wash away food particles, neutralize acids, and reduce oral bacteria, it plays a direct role in cellular energy production in the Krebs cycle making ATP, and  high fiber content in apples promote smooth digestion. Naturally occurring malic acid works alongside other compounds like pectin and quercetin in apples to support general metabolic wellness.

  • SCFA’s are natures GLPs! Whole Grains: Oats, barley, brown rice, and whole wheat. Legumes: Beans, lentils, chickpeas, and peas. Resistant Starches: Cooked-and-cooled potatoes, sweet potatoes, and green bananas. Prebiotic Vegetables: Garlic, onions, leeks, Jerusalem artichokes, and chicory root. Fruits: Apples, bananas, berries, and citrus fruits (which provide soluble fibers like pectin). Nuts and Seeds: Chia seeds, flaxseeds, and almonds. Mushrooms.

  • Visceral Manipulation for GERD/IBS: Did you know Dr. Katie can apply simple pain-free hands-on techniques to support digestion and reduce reflux?!( add a link to web page on Katie and what it is)

  • Serotonin, Boost It! with SCFA’s to stimulate and regulate its production in the gut.

  • Make sleep a priority. Get the cell phone out of the bedroom and buy a battery alarm clock. Skip the caffeine. Try Tart cherry juice at night or sleepy tea. Deep belly breathing for 5 minutes massages the vagus nerve to promote parasympathetic “rest & digest” access of the nervous system.
